Learn about Yoga Nidra

Under the large umbrella of yoga are many sections. Many of us are aware of the physical
practice and perhaps meditations, and even those have quite a few subsets. Yoga Nidra is a
sector under this large umbrella. It is completely different than all other forms of Yoga. It has
been translated to “yogic sleep”, “psychic sleep” or “sleepless sleep” yet many say it can’t be
translated and the only word for Yoga Nidra is Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is the conscious state
between waking and sleeping. During the practice our awareness is moving between the
conscious and unconscious minds. It is a place where our ego is put to the side and the mind
becomes receptive to learning and inspiration. In this practice you will get as comfortable as
possible, listen to the trained instructor, and float into a state of peaceful bliss.

There are 7-8 stages of Nidra pending your training lineage. Some are very short while others
are longer. First is preparation; preparing for comfort, stillness and relaxation. Next is setting
your resolve/ sankalpa. This is perhaps the most important part of the practice as you are
planting a seed in your subconscious that will grow and flourish. A sankalpa should be short,
broad and above all positive. Third is a rotation of consciousness which essentially brings you
into the state between alertness and asleep. Followed by an awareness of breath which
continues this blissful yogic sleep. Fifth is noticing and creating feelings and sensations in your
body. The next step is not used by all Nidra practitioners. It is visualization and can be a very
powerful tool for healing and growth. Next you repeat your resolve and finally your
practitioner will bring you back to the present moment.

Yoga Nidra is gaining popularity in the medical practice for all sorts of maladies including
insomnia and PTSD. Studies show that just 20 minutes of Yoga Nidra is equal to 4 hours of rest
for your body making this an idea practice for our busy lives.
