Why It’s Never Too Late to Pursue Your Dreams

Now may be the perfect time to go after that dream you've been holding to.

“As long as you are drawing breath in your body, as long as you’re able to stand, sit, move, talk, it is never too late to pursue your dream.”  – Tammie Brown, RD, MPH

From the very moment we were born into this world, each of us began to age. Everyday, we grew a little taller, wiser, and more mature. As children, aging meant more responsibilities and the freedom to finally go after our dreams.

Somewhere along the way though, aging stopped being fun. We stopped looking forward to growing another year older and decided thirty-five years of living was long enough. (We’ve been “thirty-five” ever since.)

But our dreams never stopped. Life just got in the way, and our belief in our own abilities began to wane. And that’s okay, because there’s more life still to live.

If you've had a dream for a long time but felt it's too late to pursue it, this post is for you. Keep reading to find out why we believe it's never too late.

The Essence of Who You Are Is Still There

Your big heart. You clever comebacks. Your knack for words. Your thoughtfulness. Your deep love for your family and friends. The way your personality fills up the room and naturally makes everyone feel at ease. It’s all still there. It’s all still you. It hasn’t disappeared.

What stands in front of you now is a new version of you, one that’s been tested, tried, and refined by the challenges of life. You’ve loved and lost. You’ve laughed and cried. You’ve fought and won. You have the kind of strength youth can’t offer; it can only be earned by having faced and overcome hard things. It’s the kind of strength that knows how to stay the course even when things get tough.

It’s exactly the kind of strength you need to pursue new dreams or pick up past ones.

Now Is the Time to Grow Bolder, Not Withdraw

In our younger years, we often spend so much time trying to fit in, trying to find ourselves, trying to discover our voice. It’s a normal and necessary phase of life. But sometimes during this phase, we end up editing ourselves down and making ourselves small. We think dreams are for fools, that we don’t have enough time to pursue them, or we abandon them entirely because no one else sees the value in them.

The beauty in maturing then is the clarity we gain on who we are, what we offer, and whose opinions really matter. That’s why this phase of life is the best time to pursue your dreams; you can do it in a way you weren’t prepared to do in your youth.

You’ve gained the knowledge, the skills, the mindset, and the willpower needed to accomplish your dreams. The experiences you’ve had have molded you into the person you need to be for those dreams to become reality.

Turn conventional thinking on its head. Don’t let age be a reason you shrink back. Lean into the clarity and grow bolder.

Your Mind Is Your Fountain of Youth

Italian actress and Hollywood star, Sophia Loren once said:

“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of the people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.” [1]

Our minds are powerful. The way we think about ourselves has a major effect on how we engage with the world. If we think we’re old, we’ll begin to withdraw and subconsciously accept there’s nothing more we can offer.

But nothing could be further from the truth. You have so much to offer, and it’s that belief that will keep you engaged with the world around you. It’s the kind of mindset that can lead a 90-year old woman to break a world record as the fastest woman in her age group to run a 200-meter race. [2]

In other words, it’s the pursuit of something beyond ourselves, beyond our day-to-day, that gives us the will to live and the drive to keep going. Shifting your mindset can help you embrace the opportunities still in front of you.
